You curve the cue ball by hitting it off-center, applying spin ("english") to the cue ball. You can also draw the cue ball back to you, after hitting another ball, by hitting the cue ball below center and you can make the cue follow the object ball by hitting the cue above center. The more spin you put on the cue ball, by striking it farther off-center, the more the ball will curve, draw or follow. By hitting the cue in different places (right, left, low, high, low-left, high-right, etc.) you can control where the cue ball will end up, positioning it for you next shot. You have to hit down on the cue ball with either left or right english. Hitting it off center causes it to squirt out the opposite way, and then the spin takes over causing it to curve back. It's just a matter of getting enough spin on the cue ball relative to it's forward speed. For extreme masse's, your cue stick will almost be perpendicular to the table. You have to stroke pretty fast to get the spin on the cue ball.
