On most tables you need to begin by taking off the rails. Generally there are rail bolts under the rails that go up through the slate and into the rails. Once these are removed, you can take the rails and pockets off the table.

After this you can remove the cloth. It will usually be stapled all along the bottom edge of the slate, or sometimes it will be glued. Once the cloth is removed, you can dismantle the slate, assuming that it is a 3 piece. Most are fastened to the frame with screws. Remove these screws and take the slate pieces off. The frame will be pretty easy to dismantle.

This should all be pretty easy to do if you are not needing to be too careful.

I agree with Johnny though, why not donate it? Although if it is some walmart table, perhaps the sledge hammer is the best idea.
